Genesis 1:27 tells us that we are created in God’s own image. Jeremiah 1:5 and Psalm 139 remind us that God knit us together in the womb and even set us apart for a unique purpose. At the moment of conception, a unique set of DNA is formed – one that has never existed before and never will again. It’s mind boggling when you consider the fact that God knew us before we were even conceived. Not just knew of us, but intimate details about our lives – everything from what we would look like and who we would marry to our biggest fears and greatest accomplishments.
Sadly, on the 40th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision, we are also reminded of the millions of innocent lives that have been taken before they even had a chance to begin in the name of “choice.” It’s even more sobering when you think about what all of those children could have grown up to be – presidents, CEOs, scientists, evangelists – and what they could have accomplished. Could we have discovered the cure for cancer 20 years ago? Found a way to eradicate HIV/AIDS? Prevented a war or financial crisis? Lead thousands to the Lord?
I have heard and read the stories of children whose mothers changed their mind at the last minute and chose life instead, as well as those of mothers who live every day with the regret that they did not. I have listened to the testimony of pro-life advocate and late-term abortion survivor, Gianna Jessen (Google her – she’s pretty remarkable). I witnessed 10,000 Christian college students give a now pro-life Norma Jean McCorvey (a.k.a. “Jane Roe”) a standing ovation after hearing her story of transformation. Chances are, this issue hits a lot closer to home than many of us realize.
Having just observed Sanctity of Human Life Week (January 21-28), let us who are pro-life resolve to do more than just pray and speak out against this great evil that exists in our society. Although those things are important, we challenge you to get involved. Donate to your local crisis pregnancy center. Better yet, volunteer. Take advantage of the “Screen My Portfolio” tool on our website to make sure you’re not invested in and supporting companies that profit from the abortion industry. Together, we can make a difference.
Life can be a lot of things sometimes, but above all else, it is sacred. This poem by Mother Theresa sums it up well:
“Life is…”
By Mother Theresa
Life is an opportunity, benefit from it.
Life is beauty, admire it.
Life is a dream, realize it.
Life is a challenge, meet it.
Life is a duty, complete it.
Life is a game, play it.
Life is a promise, fulfill it.
Life is sorrow, overcome it.
Life is a song, sing it.
Life is a struggle, accept it.
Life is a tragedy, confront it.
Life is an adventure, dare it.
Life is luck, make it.
Life is too precious, do not destroy it.
Life is life, fight for it.
